Ancestor of Glenn Goodson

Private Furney Goodson

Private Furney Goodson enlisted in Captain John Scogin's Battery, Georgia Light Artillery in May of 1862 in Griffin, Georgia. It was sometimes referred to as the “Church Bell Battery” due to its guns being cast from church bells from across the state. Initially the unit served in the relatively quite Department of South Carolina and was later transferred back to Georgia and then Florida. It would see heavy action at the Battle of Chickamauga, where it was attached to Melanethon Smith's battalion. There it distinguished itself and received honorable mention from General Cheatham for the havoc its shells wreaked on the Union lines. The unit would also participate in the Atlanta Campaign and suffering causalities at the Battle of Decatur. The battery was finally disbanded in January 1865.
