Vines Collier, Jr. Charles
Vines Collier Jr. was born in Upson County, Georgia in 1846.
He enlisted as a Private in Company K, 5th
Georgia Volunteer Infantry on May 11, 1861 and was discharged on
April 4, 1862 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
He then enlisted as a Private in Company B, 2nd
Battalion Georgia Sharpshooters.
Private Collier was captured at Nashville, Tenn. on
December 12, 1864. He
was released from Camp Douglas on May 9, 1865.
Private Collier died in Talbot County, Georgia on
December 9, 1883 and is buried in Evans Chapel Cemetery in
Talbot County.
2nd Battalion
Sharpshooters contained six companies and was formed in the summer
of 1862. The men were from various sections of the state and some
had seen prior service. It was assigned to General J.K. Jackson's
Brigade and fought with distinction at Murfreesboro, Chickamauga,
and Missionary Ridge. Later the unit was brigaded under General
Gist and took an active part in the battles around Atlanta, Hood's
Tennessee operations, and the North Carolina Campaign.
